M&Ms

The other day my mom asked me to accompany her to one of her doctors appointments. She was not feeling well so I went along to make sure that everything was o.k. We were sitting out in the waiting area just making small talk when I noticed an elderly couple walk up together hand in hand. They checked in and then quietly sat next to my mom and I. I watched them every so often glance over at each other and smile a soft smile.

The elderly man started to grab something out of his coat pocket and I noticed it was a bag of peanut M&Ms. He tore open the bag, touched her hand, and poured her handful. Then decided to help himself to some too. Never saying a word to each other she looked through her handful of candy and picked out the blue ones and he picked out the yellows and they quietly switched colors. They continued this through the whole bag of M&Ms saying nothing but ever so often exchanging smiles. When they were finished he patted her knee and she laid her head on his shoulder as to let him know how thankful she was for sharing.

My heart melted. I love seeing people who have been together for a long time. They just know where they stand. There can be no words exchanged, instead just simple gestures to let each other know they care!
